Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
