The artist has handed over the full amount of his £25,000 award cash to the MVT, which works to save the UK's independent live music spots.

The star was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his third album the album was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has decided to give the cash to the MVT, in recognition of the essential function local spots had in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing my current career if it hadn't been for all the shows I played around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," stated Sam Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to support the industry, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

He also participated, generating over £100k on his recent tour to help 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds helped locations that were facing potential shutdown due to issues stemming from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces received monetary aid in improving infrastructure and gear that helped artists and concertgoers.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in big venues supports the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

The musician is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

In Pulp received the trophy in the mid-90s for their release the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker announced that the act would give their winnings to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist split her bounty across multiple organizations, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their classes, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they needed new equipment," the artist shared with a publication.

Two years ago, the band gave their funds to the youth organization that supported their group, as well as other local music groups.

And 1994 winners M People donated their award to a MS organization after a friend was found to have the illness.

"The victory was sufficient," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning impacted another person's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved several local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

One venue in the city and the second in Bristol were acquired under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who buy "ownership units" in the buildings.
