The speculation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
