Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
