Jair Bolsonaro arrested after being deemed a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
