Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
