Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Among Music Fans

It has been 20 years since the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, offering players everywhere the tools to become rock legends. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing anyone who has nailed Free Bird’s lengthy guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match coloured notes moving along the screen in time with the music. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre prior to teaming up with the publisher, later purchased by Activision during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable franchise which made a significant influence for many of the artists included, introducing decades-old bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, remembers the initial financial challenges in securing the songs – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music because the cost was so high,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it proved nearly impossible. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were pretty convinced the project would flop. But once Guitar Hero took off, and record sales airtime were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “Among the remarkable aspects was the number of mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band one featured act included their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist remembers the way the game brought older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a bigger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered outdated material, but then once it got featured on the game young people were finding it, abruptly it was cool. This validated the genre, and got rid of the outdated tag. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the band's first record was still not available stateside, so Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the band as they went on a North American tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew had on Never Too Late during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Music's heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in specialized game editions centered around each band’s catalogue and associated lore, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the group more money compared to their studio albums. It sold well over half a million units upon release, while demand for their songs saw an increase of up to 40% during an era as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Earlier this year, a streamer completed a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics and extensive personalization features. This track is challenging enough on the hardest setting, not to mention played at double speed while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play other games, that doesn’t mean you should pick up a real gun and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

The band had already completed a successful tour when their hit was featured on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our records were moving like crazy,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before the headliners at the event.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure via the game was so immense that it has risked overshadow everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “Should you just listen to a single track, it’s totally cool – each person has their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy from the Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, clothes or games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what we were aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of being a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators believed humans have a natural urge to make music, and they wanted to use technology to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority installments were released in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, including spin-offs like DJ Hero, complete with a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus on peripherals waned, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Titles like the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the scene active, with expectations of something from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome another game in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be similar to sports games where you can releases,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music that it could be perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t persist with new generations.”
