Colombian President Declares 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have intensified the tone in their verbal conflict, heightening tensions bilaterally following American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He runs drug factories and processing labs and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Rising Threats coupled with Claims

Talking to journalists over the weekend, Trump suggested comparable use of force against Colombia, asserting Colombia is “very sick too” and governed by an unwell individual involved in producing narcotics and selling it to the United States."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the illicit industry.

A Strained Alliance

The country for decades served as a key ally of Washington in the campaign combating drug cartels and enjoyed wide political approval in Washington, yet ties have soured dramatically after Trump came to office.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions like the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters disbanded following a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Firm Response

When asked whether a military operation similar to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the last century, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am no illegitimate and I am not a narco," he declared.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into numerous insurgents in the mountains. And if they detain the president, whom many of the population loves and respects, they will release the fierce spirit of the nation," he admonished.

From Fighter to President

The president dedicated some years as a young man belonging in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed he did not engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he participated in creating the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of the Colombian capital before winning president.

"I swore to never again hold a gun ... but in defense of my country I would take up the fight," he said.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Rejection

Colombia's defense chief stated that Petro's protection team was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with the US president, yet figures from all sides of the ideological divide have condemned the notion of a US attack on Colombia.

Political and Economic Sanctions

The US revoked Petro’s visa after he urged US military personnel to disobey any illegal orders. Months later, the US enacted financial sanctions targeting Petro, the first lady and several close collaborators.

Concurrently the US was building up its troop levels in the region and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast near Colombia.
