A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
